This album sounds like strobe lights.
Not gonna lie, I found this at 7:00 a.m. this morning (which in hindsight isn’t fitting to the music at all), but I’m very glad I did. Paul Maxwell is Georgia-born, LA-based artist, producer, and founder of 678 records. For me, this album is great for two big reasons. One, that it takes you into its world. And two, it’s very cohesive.
The album starts off with the hazy intro track ‘DOME’, which to me serves as an introduction to the world he builds in the rest of the album. Oh, and that’s the other thing, the album sits with just five tracks and 17-minutes of run time. But there’s plenty going on after that. Because he does not take it easy after that, like at all.
For the next four tracks you’re almost whipped around, bounced back and forth. Booming drums, loud distorted vocals, and flaring instrumentation keep you engaged the whole way through. He put that “each song chronicles a further descent into chaos and beauty and an inability to distinguish the two” and I think that’s it put perfectly. Because there’s something really beautiful about all these thrashing parts going full throttle all at once. If you stop in the moment and look at everything going on around you, it’s a cool feeling.
He cites the album’s influences as 90’s rave, 2000 drum and bass, and Atlanta hip-hop. The biggest one to me is the rave. Like I said before, the album is very chaotic. Makes you feel like you’re at a rave. The promotional art around the album holds this up as well (which you can see on his instagram @pmxwell).
It’s definitely worth a listen. Have a good one!
