New Music Friday: Drops from jean dawson, Tame impala and more

by Jack Shapiro

Welcome back our weekly New Music Friday Roundup. Good week. Again, a lot of drops in yet another cold December week. December is great for a lot of reasons. The holidays, snow, my birthday (the 20th!!!), but usually not great music releases. With that being said, let’s get into all those releases.

“MENTHOL*” by Jean Dawson (featuring Mac DeMarco): Jean Dawson follows up his first studio album Pixel Bath with this banger. Man, I love Jean Dawson’s music. I really like how he’s this ambiguous mish-mash of different genres that all sound familiar, but you can’t pin down the exact sound of it all put together. Great song. Unfortunately, Demarco’s vocals aren’t featured (other than a short message he gives to Jean Dawson in the last few seconds of the song). But, there’s a fantastic guitar bridge in the last leg of the song from him. Either way, great song overall.

Fighting Demons by Juice WRLD: Juice WRLD drops his second posthumous album this week. The album features 18-tracks and includes features from Justin Bieber, Polo G, Trippie Redd, and SUGA of BTS. A lot of production from Nick Mira as always with Juice.

“Breakfast” by Fana Hues: The California-born singer dropped her second single in a month with “Breakfast”. You can also watch her COLORS performance of the song here. These two offerings (“Pieces being the other single) are a bit more polished than the HUES project, but not in a bad way. Her voice is a standout, and Fana Hues seems to be on her way to stardom. The two singles and HUES are definitely worth checking out.

“No Choice” by Tame Impala: Kevin Parker’s been rolling out the release of the deluxe tracks and the remixes of his last album The Slow Rush. This song is sick. The groove on the track is perfect, and the guitar that comes in on the bridge following is amazing too. Given the last single from the rollout was “Breathe Deeper” with Lil Yachty, this is shaping up to a great deluxe.

Richer Than I Ever Been by Rick Ross: The 11th studio album from Ross. The album name pretty plainly states how he’s been doing, he’s Richer Than Ever. There are a ton of big names on the record, such as Future, Benny The Butcher, Jazmine Sullivan, and more.

yo!88 by Pi’erre Bourne and TM88: This is dope. I like this for a lot of reasons. I love that this project shows off Pi’erre more as a rapper. I love that they’re both producers. I’m excited to listen to this and I hope you are too.

POP? by Tierra Whack: Tierra Whack comes back with another EP following up the release of last week’s RAP? EP. The concept follows suit of last time, that one was rap, this one is pop. Who knows what we’ll get next week. I’m excited to see what this turns into though. If it fits into a whole album, or if these are just stand-alone projects.

“Tabaula Rasa” by Earl Sweatshirt (featuring Armand Hammer): Another Earl single? He’s back again and even announced his next full-length project. Sick! drops January 14th. These past two singles have been a bit more high-energy than FEET OF CLAY and Some Rap Songs. That’s not a knock on those records at all, because that very much fit the vibe of the record. The productions a bit punchier too. Interested to see the direction of the project, will probably turn out great either way given Earl’s talent level.

ONCE TWICE MELODY by Beach House: Alternative group Beach House return with the release of this record. The group made up of vocalist and mulit-instrumentalist Victoria Legrand and guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Alex Scally, produced the record entirely themselves.

“Darkness Of The Night” by Baird: Catch up on Baird! He’s an awesome singer, producer, and instrumentalist from Maryland gearing up for the drop of the third installment of the BIRDSONGS series. The song’s produced by him, and I’m personally a huge fan of the drums on this one. Definitely recommend checking out the first two installments of the BIRDSONGS series, and his previous single “Easy On Them Turns”.

Have a good one!
