Check Out: 'Remain Calm' EP by Jordan Ward

by Jack Shapiro

Remain Calm is the EP by Los Angeles-based, St. Louis-raised Jordan Ward. And it’s pretty damn good.

Ward is a 26-year-old who actually didn’t even start off making music in the first place. He moved to LA a little under 10 years ago to pursue a dance career. He got to dance with icons like Beyoncé and Janet Jackson, and even went on tour with Justin Bieber.

But eventually, he found his way into releasing his own music. First, with the EP A Peak At The Summit, followed up by the Valley Hopefuls full-length album. And that takes us to the Remain Calm EP.

The project is a quick listen at just five tracks and 11 minutes but leaves an impression. He kicks off with the R&B-slow-burner “Standards”, where he talks about setting standards for himself for his success and character. It’s a timely song for his first release with the major label Interscope. He sings “People dying to be famous/that shit is contagious”. I’d imagine as an artist it’s hard not to get wrapped up in that stuff, especially when you’re coming up.

The next of three songs the EP dabbles in different lanes of R&B. Like the next song, “Lil Baby Crush” is a throwback cut (that’s my favorite). The songs “Couscous” and “Thrive” are both woozy cuts where he sings about what’s on his mind, anything from anxiety to past romantic relationships, to the pressure we face just as people in society. The final cut is a banger entitled “Steph”. The song kicks off with a voicemail from a friend saying that although he gets the song isn’t serious, some people won’t take him seriously, to which he immediately kicks off the song. I can appreciate that he doesn’t really care.

The project has a real rawness and authenticity that appeals to a lot of people. It’s not too done up or overproduced. There are fun moments and there are serious moments. It’s a really nice intro to an artist with a lot of talent. Check it out! And be on the lookout for Jordan Ward Music in the future! Have a good one!
