‘Digits’ by Femdot is a trip.

The buzzing synths in the first half of the song are enough to grab your attention, or even the booming “what” screams to introduce Chicago rapper Femdot’s verse. The song’s first verse is both narrative and confident. He raps “I done did some things you ain’t ever seen/that’s why everything I spit sound like it comes from Medillín/Remember thinking this was it when I was seventeen/I was tryna be an activist and bro was selling lean”.

There’s so much creativity filled into the song. “Lean” is bleeped out, as if he doesn’t want to incriminate his friend. Then the catchy refrain “is you rollin or not?” on the bridge leads you into an even wilder second half. The chaotic beat is paired perfectly with Femdot’s high-pitched chaotic flow. He spits clever bars about being independent and getting to the point he’s at without a label.

My favorite line of the whole song is “your favorite rapper he is in the scope, no Interscope/that’s the Aftermath of being Shady bro”. Some label bars for you.

The track then undergoes another big switch with soft guitars and vocals from Philadelphia’s theMIND. Three major switches in one song.

Personally, I haven’t dug too deep into Femdot’s discography, but it’s clear he’s both a talented and creative artist. From this song and others (“Backroad” from his recent album Not For Sale is another standout track) you can tell he can express this creativity while also creating a classic and personable sound.
