New Music Friday

New Music Friday: New Albums From The Weeknd, Gunna, And More!

by Jack Shapiro

Hey! Happy Friday!

And happy first week of 2022. After two more lackluster weeks, this week really went off, and with little notice. On theme, the Weekend announced just a few days ago he’d be dropping his new album Dawn FM. At “The Dawn” of the year, haha. And just after, Gunna announced he’d be dropping the last installment of the Drip Season series with DS4Ever. Quickly enough, there were two releases slated, one from one of the biggest artists in hip-hop, and one from one of the biggest artists on the planet.

There’s also a ton slated for the upcoming weeks, and a couple of other great releases sprinkled throughout the week. BIGBABYGUCCI announced his new album Iridesense just last week after already having dropped his album Human back in October. We also have an album from Earl Sweatshirt coming next week, and a Saba album coming early February.

Anyways, let’s get into this week’s releases:

Dawn FM by The Weeknd: Alright, I’m just going to say I’m very confused. I was very excited about this album. I’m not the world’s biggest Weeknd fan or anything like that, but I do enjoy his music a lot. I thought it was pretty cool to like The Weeknd. He’s years and years past it being edgy to be a fan of his, but I thought he was well-liked. I have not spoken to a single person who’s excited about this album. Why? What did he do? When did it become uncool to like The Weeknd? I’m very disappointed. I understand his voice is not for everyone. But I haven’t talked to a friend who’s as excited to listen. I might need some new friends. I will say, off first listen, I did get some Costco vibes, which is unfortunate. But I did enjoy it. The song with Tyler, The Creator was great. I liked how it was a brighter expansion of the After Hours sound. I liked how it was very danceable. I’m just not here for The Weeknd hate.

DS4Ever by Gunna: Gunna dropped his first album in almost two years since he dropped WUNNA back in May of 2020. It’s 19 tracks total, and loaded with features. Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Chloe, G Herbo, and more. In my opinion, if you like Gunna, you’ll like this. If you don’t like Gunna, you won’t. Just laying it out there.

Iridesense by BIGBABYGUCCI: This one’s definitely worth a listen. Very much sounds like the name (and yes, it’s spelled like that on purpose). It’s a quick listen, at eight tracks and 16 minutes. The production is amazing. A very enjoyable trap album.

“Titanic” by Earl Sweatshirt: Earl Sweatshirt drops off another single, ahead of the release of his album Sick! slated for next week. It’s a cool change of pace. A bit more trap-influenced than his comeback track “2010”.

“Funny Girl” by Father John Misty: Singer-songwriter Father John Misty returns for his first new music since 2020, and is gearing up for his first album release since 2018. His music tends to always be thought-evoking, so definitely check it out if his music is your kind of vibe!
