New Music Friday: Happy New Year!

by Jack Shapiro

Hey everyone!

Before getting into the roundup, I want to wish everyone a happy new year. It’s been another confusing 365 around the globe, so I think we should all be proud of ourselves for getting through it.

I also want to say thank you to you all. To everyone who read an article, followed on Instagram, or checked out the website. It’s really exciting getting this started. I appreciate everyone who’s shown support along the way, because that’s not something you have to do, so that makes me really happy.

Unfortunately for us music fans there’s not a whole ton of new music that dropped this week. But, fortunately for us music fans, it’s the time of year we all go back and reflect on our favorite drops of the past 12 months (article on that in the next day or so!!). 2021 was a pretty sick year for music, and especially for up-and-coming and lesser-known artists, so we all have that to be grateful for.

In the same vein, the turn into the New Year gives us the chance to reflect on ourselves. New Year’s resolutions have become almost unbearably corny. Unfortunately, but I do think it’s very 21st Century to label self-improvement as corny. But I do get it, everyone does it, no one follows through. It’s annoying. Myself included. I make at least three or four massive resolutions and follow through on maybe one of them for like a week. I am not on any sort of high horse. But I do want to mention one thing that my dad always tells me. The only thing stopping you from change is you. If you don’t like something, there’s always something you can do to change it. You’re in control of making those changes. Again, I’m in the same boat as everyone else out there that hasn’t followed through on resolutions, but I do want to say that in hopes it gets across to somebody else. Nobody’s perfect, and there’s always time for self-improvement. Even if it’s just mindset.

Alright now that sappy hours are out of the way, let’s get into some releases! Again, the article on my favorite releases is coming out in the next couple of days. I encourage you to come up with your own lists too! It’s a lot of fun. Do it with a friend if you can. Let them know why their lists suck and why you objectively have a better taste in music. Have fun with it.

Now for the new releases:

“Juss Lef Vegas/Fybrspace Summit/Vanilla Sky” by A$AP Twelvyy – Another three tracks to follow-up his “Last Train 2 Paris” single from last week. Again, his voice is sick. The production is great across the three songs. I think he has good beat selection in general and knows how to play to his strengths, these past four instrumentals pair up with his vocals really nicely. I like the “FYBRSPACE” beat a lot. It sounds like a cool mix of a slow, murky beat that one of the Griselda guys would rap over, and an old-school A$AP Mob track. Check out the songs tho.

“In My Word” by MIKE – MIKE drops off another track for the second week in a row. Classic MIKE. Slower flows, over a dreary beat. Very good. Recommend checking it out.

Alright, that’s all. Happy New Year!
